HOW TO MEASURE FOR ROLLER AND SOLAR SHADES
Accurate measurements are essential because every shade is custom-made specifically for your order. Please read these instructions completely before measuring.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN
• Use a steel measuring tape. Do not use a cloth tape, ruler, or measuring application.
• Measure and record every dimension to the closest 1/8 inch.
• Always write the width first, followed by the height.
• Measure every window individually, even when the windows appear identical.
• Do not round measurements to the nearest whole inch, half inch, or quarter inch.
• Decide whether your shade will be installed inside or outside the window opening.
MEASURING TO THE CLOSEST 1/8 INCH
Record measurements using these increments:
1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, or 7/8 inch.
If a measurement falls between two 1/8-inch marks, use the closest 1/8-inch mark. Carefully check each measurement before recording it.
INSIDE MOUNT
An inside mount is installed within the window opening.
-
Measure the inside width at the top, middle, and bottom of the opening.
-
Record the narrowest of the three width measurements to the closest 1/8 inch.
-
Measure the inside height on the left, center, and right side of the opening.
-
Record the longest of the three height measurements to the closest 1/8 inch.
-
Check that the window opening has enough unobstructed depth for the selected brackets and valance.
Enter the measurements requested by the product configurator. Do not make your own deductions unless the product page specifically instructs you to do so.
Important: The finished fabric width is normally narrower than the overall shade width because space is required for the brackets, controls, and operating hardware. Small light gaps on each side are normal with an inside-mounted roller shade.
OUTSIDE MOUNT
An outside mount is installed over the window opening or trim.
-
Measure the total width of the area you want the shade to cover.
-
Include enough overlap on both sides to improve privacy and light control.
-
Record the total width to the closest 1/8 inch.
-
Measure from the intended mounting location down to where you want the shade to end.
-
Record the total height to the closest 1/8 inch.
-
Make sure the mounting surface is flat, secure, and clear of handles and other obstructions.
We generally recommend extending the shade approximately 2 to 3 inches beyond each side of the window opening when space allows. More overlap can improve room darkening and privacy.
The fabric portion of a roller shade is normally narrower than the overall shade width because of the operating hardware. Allow sufficient overlap when determining the total outside-mount width.
IMPORTANT MEASURING INFORMATION
• Room-darkening fabric does not create complete blackout conditions. Light may enter around the edges of the shade.
• Check for window handles, locks, trim, cranks, alarms, or other obstructions.
• Confirm that the selected mounting surface can support the shade.
• Large windows, unusual openings, bay windows, and corner windows may require special measuring instructions. Contact us before ordering if you are uncertain.
• Do not use measurements from an existing shade unless you have confirmed exactly how that shade was originally manufactured.
• Do not assume that two windows are the same size.
